Redentore Festival in Venice: how to experience it
🎆 Redentore Festival in Venice: history, traditions and how to experience it
The Redentore Festival in Venice, also known as the Feast of the Redeemer and one of the most iconic Venice Summer Fireworks events, is something you don’t just visit… you experience.
For one night, the city transforms: the lagoon lights up, boats glow with decorations, and long tables fill with laughter and traditions passed down through generations.
It’s a celebration that brings everything together: history, spirituality, conviviality and spectacle.
👉 And when, at midnight, the sky above Venice explodes into color and reflects across the water, you truly understand why this is one of the most unforgettable events in Italy.
📜 The history of the Redentore Festival
The festival dates back to 1577, when Venice celebrated the end of a devastating plague epidemic.
To mark the occasion, the Church of the Redeemer (Il Redentore) was built on Giudecca island, designed by Andrea Palladio.
One of the most meaningful traditions is the crossing of the temporary floating bridge, about 300 meters long, connecting Zattere to Giudecca.
Walking across it, suspended above the water, is a unique and symbolic experience.
At the end of the bridge stands the elegant church, which becomes the heart of the celebrations.
On Sunday, the votive mass takes place here, representing the most authentic side of the festival.
🎇 A unique night: fireworks, boats and traditions
Saturday night is the highlight.
The lagoon becomes a floating stage filled with decorated boats, lights, music and shared dinners.
Typical dishes include bigoli in sauce, sarde in saor, roast duck and traditional Venetian biscuits.
The most anticipated moment comes late in the evening.
👉 For about 45 minutes, the sky above the lagoon lights up with one of the most spectacular fireworks shows in Italy.
Colorful reflections on the water create a breathtaking atmosphere.
Best viewing spots include:
- Riva degli Schiavoni
- Punta della Dogana
- or directly from a boat
After the fireworks, many locals head to the Lido to watch the sunrise and take a symbolic early morning swim.
⛪ Sunday: the most authentic side
On Sunday, the atmosphere becomes quieter.
Locals cross the floating bridge to attend mass at the Redentore church.
A more intimate moment that reveals the true meaning of the celebration.
